Is There a Little Jonah in You?

Courtney Clark - Contributor

Any other day, you're "blessed and highly favored," as you strut into school, work or church. But today, the holy spirit spoke to your heart with a new task at hand.... God is giving you a divine appointment ; that is, an opportunity to show mercy on another. You say, "No problemo!" That is, until God directs you toward people you otherwise would never give the time of day.

And these people you were called to help aren't your poor, elderly, meek nor mild; rather, they are the crass, ignorant and obnoxious fools you generally try to avoid at all costs. So, what do you do? Like Jonah, many believers would blatantly disobey the Lord, citing the worldly fact that we can't change anyone. But is that really the issue? Or could it be a subconscious and unrighteous notion that some people are just "too bad" to receive God's mercy?

After sweeping God's command to reach out to "those people," the pep in your step comes back and you return to your regularly scheduled program, already in progress. And then, it happens.... Although you don't find yourself inside the body of a giant fish, you find yourself convicted---the undeniable feeling of disappointment from the Lord. So, how did you get yourself into such a "whale," and how can you prevent such occurrences? Quite simple.

The answer lies in the question: your "self" must die each day as you strive to become obedient servants of such a merciful and forgiving God. As believers, we must do the will of God. We must not forget that Jesus went to Calvary and gave His life as an atonement for our sins. Out of obedience to God, Christ paid a debt He never owed.... There will come another time in which, you will be called....

Will you answer?
